Who: Alexander the Great [Narrative, but can be open to Clio if you want, Charlie!]
What: The world is nowhere near done with you
When: Around 220 BC
Where: Alexandria, Egypt
The last thing he remembered was being horribly sick with fever. Burning up, hardly able to talk or lift his head or arms. Everything hurt, he felt like he was on fire. The generals kept asking, "Tell us, Alexander, tell us who?". But he couldn't respond, he could barely even think. And then his eyes closed, and there was only blackness and peace.
He'd expected to end up in Hades, to be judged and sent wherever they found him worthy. And he was, but he was given the choice, between the Asphodel Meadows and Elysium. It took him a little while, but eventually he chose Elysium, with a stern warning from Hades to always be respectful of his daughter.
Time passed, although how much, he wasn't sure. But one day, much like any other, he stopped as he was walking someplace, looking up and swearing he saw the cavernous ceiling tremble. He blinked, and then he was looking at...sky? Wait, that wasn't right. And it was bloody hot. And he was pretty sure the Underworld didn't smell like burning sand. He looked around, taking everything in as fast as he could. There were people everywhere, a marketplace nearby, grand buildings of stone clearly meant to impress. And for the first time in his life, Alexander had no idea what to do.
"Excuse me," he said, reaching out to grab a passing man's arm. "Excuse me, where am I?"
The man just looked at him like he was crazy. "Alexandria, of course," he replied. "You should get out of the sun, my friend."
"Yes," Alexander said faintly. "Yes, I'll do that. Thank you." He ducked into the shade between two nearby buildings, sitting down hard on the sand. Alexandria. His Alexandria. Still standing, still beautiful and thriving. He was still trying to wrap his head around everything, when he felt a chill across his back, and he turned to see a shade right behind him.
"I bring a message from Lord Hades," it said. "You have been given a great gift, Alexander. Few are ever granted the privilege of a second life. Use it wisely, or I will be displeased."
Alexander couldn't do much more than nod and say, "Of course", because what else was there to say? He watched the shade fade away, and looked down at himself. He needed clothes to better blend in, and a meal wouldn't go amiss right now. He didn't have any money on him, that he could tell, and if he had to work for it, so be it. He set off into the sunlight, marveling at the feeling of warmth on his skin once again.

Date: 2013-01-08 03:25 am (UTC)That was a Muse's prerogative, and she could wander freely in Alexandria. It was the only place in Egypt she could go, and that was a little sad, but she enjoyed it. The warm sun always felt nice against her skin.
It was then she spotted the figure and she could tell who it was from here. She'd paid close attention to his life, and then his legacy. She preserved it and made sure it was written about and now he was here.
And very, very, lost.
Smiling she turned and let herself be visible. She walked beside Alexander and gave him a curious glance. "You don't fit in at all Alexander." She smiled and took his arm to guide him aside."You can trust me. I know you." Muses couldn't be seen by mortals, but now he wasn't mortal anymore. "And you know me as Clio. I made sure your legacy was made history." Not that it had been a hard task. His name had endured without hardly any help on her account. "How long have you been wandering?"

Date: 2013-01-08 03:42 am (UTC)"It's an honor to meet you, Clio," he said, not sure if he should bow or what, so he settled on a deep nod and hoped that would be enough. "And I thank you for that. To answer your question...not long, maybe half an hour? I just...appeared up here. No idea where I was until I asked." He cast his eyes out over Alexandria again. "How long has it been? Since...since I died?"

Date: 2013-01-08 04:02 am (UTC)"Here, wait." And sure he would she rose and wandered into the marketplace. After a little while she returned with some clothes and something to eat. She handed him both and sat down. "You look too different. You've died Alexander. You have to learn to fit into a world where your name is no more then a legend. Telling people who you are will probably get you locked away. I'm sorry for that."

Date: 2013-01-08 04:20 am (UTC)He looked up as she left, wrapping his arms around his legs and settling in to wait. When she came back with food and closed, he smiled and said, "Thank you, I was just thinking how I was going to get these things." He ate and nodded while she talked, because what she was saying really was true. "It's not your fault," he said. "It's probably going to take me a while to adjust, and I need to catch up on what's happened since I died, but the way I see it, if that's what I have to do, I'll do it. This life is a gift I never expected to have, ever."

Date: 2013-01-08 04:37 am (UTC)She let him eat and set her hands on her lap. "I can help you if you like. Until you get on your feet. I can get you caught up too." She figured there was probably no one who knew better. "When we go to the Valley, we'll need to be careful. The Gods here aren't too fond of us Geeks for usurping so many of their domains." She couldn't blame them really. "As long as we give them their dues we'll be alright." She gave him another smile. "Just use it well. My Uncle isn't fond of wasted efforts. And it's summer so he'll be grouchy for a while."

Date: 2013-01-08 05:15 am (UTC)His smile was small and genuine. "I'd like that, thank you," he said. "Everyone I know is long dead, there's nowhere and no one I can really go and find." He nodded as she explained about the Gods of the area. "I can do that. Best not to upset anyone."
"I will," he said. "He reminded me of that when he sent a shade up to tell me to use it wisely." Then he remembered the stories of Hades and Persephone, and that explained a few things. "I didn't even think about that, I didn't even know what year it was, let alone the season."

Date: 2013-01-08 05:33 am (UTC)She rose then and gave him a hand. "Here, you can come with me and stay in my home. I got them to make me a Library. It's beautiful. I'll show you one of these days. It'll be the best place to catch up."

Date: 2013-01-08 06:18 am (UTC)He took her hand and stood up. "If you're sure. And I'd love to see the Library. I loved learning, even as a child."

Date: 2013-01-08 06:28 am (UTC)"And I do. If she's seen or I find her I'll point her your way. Or vice versa." Gently she led him into the house and motioned him to one of the rooms. "Go and get changed. I'll answer what you need me to when you get dressed."

Date: 2013-01-08 07:29 am (UTC)"If she ever does, I'd appreciate that," he said, heading into the room she'd pointed him too. He changed into the clothes, peeling off the simple tunic he'd awoken in and making a mental note to burn it as soon as possible. He'd never be able to think of it as anything other than the clothes he came back from the dead in.
He came back out and said, "Alright. At least I look more normal now. So...lots has changed, I'm guessing?"

Date: 2013-01-08 07:46 am (UTC)She waited until he'd sat down before giving him some of the scrolls that detailed the years he'd missed. She'd started with the years after his death, assured he was mostly curious about that. "Your empire's gone." She offered, knowing he'd figure that one out quickly, if he hadn't already. "But your legacy isn't."

Date: 2013-01-08 08:51 am (UTC)He sighed. "I figured as much. They were fighting for control before I was even dead. Kept hounding me, even onto my deathbed. It must have really irked them, to never know. How long did it last?" Even before, he'd had a voracious appetite for knowledge, and he'd try and learn as much as he could from Clio before she got sick of having him around. "It was rather nice to see the city still standing and doing so well," he added.

Date: 2013-01-08 09:10 am (UTC)"Alexandria endures." she smiled to that. "Ptolemy's legacy, that." She sighed, "the empire? Until you died. Then the generals took pieces of it and ruled it in their own names. Like Ptolemy did with Egypt. Your legacy? Well you're sitting here, aren't you?" She smiled. "Your tales are still being sung, and people keep your training. Everyone speaks of great Alexander."
